Leucine is an essential amino acid and one of the three branched-chain amino acids, alongside isoleucine and valine. It comes from protein in food and is a strong trigger for building muscle protein, as well as a source of energy.
Plasma leucine is part of a full amino acid profile and reflects protein intake and branched-chain amino acid handling. Low levels can reflect poor intake, while high levels feature in inherited conditions such as maple syrup urine disease. It is most useful read with isoleucine and valine.
