An essential amino acid and precursor to tyrosine and neurotransmitters.
Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that comes from food. It is a building block for proteins and the source of tyrosine, which in turn makes dopamine, adrenaline and thyroid hormones. Your body converts most surplus phenylalanine into tyrosine.
Plasma phenylalanine is part of a full amino acid profile. The best known reason to measure it is phenylketonuria, an inherited condition where phenylalanine builds up. Raised levels are read together with tyrosine and the rest of the profile.
