Pharmazeut im Praktikum

In one sentence

A Pharmazeut im Praktikum, usually shortened to PhiP, is a pharmacy graduate completing the practical year before approbation. A PhiP is the only person to whom the puncture of a venöse Blutentnahme may be delegated.

A Pharmazeut im Praktikum, almost always shortened to PhiP, has finished the university part of pharmacy studies and is working through the practical year that precedes approbation.

In the context of the ApoVWG the PhiP occupies a very specific position. Under § 11c Apothekengesetz the venöse Blutentnahme belongs to an approbierter Apotheker who has completed an ärztliche Schulung. One element of it, and only one, may be handed on: the puncture itself, to a PhiP working under supervision, who has completed their own ärztliche Schulung.

Everything around the puncture stays with the pharmacist. Aufklärung, Anamnese and consent may never be delegated, to a PhiP or to anyone else.

The contrast with a PTA is the part worth remembering. A PTA may vaccinate but may never take blood from a vein. A PhiP may take blood from a vein under supervision but is not yet approbiert and therefore cannot run the consultation alone.

For rota planning that has a practical consequence. A pharmacy with one trained pharmacist and one trained PhiP can run two chairs during a campaign day, because the pharmacist keeps the consultations while the PhiP takes the samples. A pharmacy with one trained pharmacist and three PTA cannot.

The PhiP route also has a longer effect. Practical-year staff who train on the draw arrive at approbation already qualified for the service.
